WORK-RELATED STRESS CAN LEAD TO POOR JOB PERFORMANCE
SAN DIEGO May 19, 2006 – Suffering from work-related stress can
affect one’s ability to meet
deadlines, make decisions, and manage professional relationships. According
to the American
Psychiatric Association, one in four people report they have missed work
as a result of workrelated
stress. In observance of Mental Health Month,
the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT)
offers tips on how to reduce stress levels and boost work productivity.
• Cultivate a positive work environment.
• Prioritize and set manageable goals.
• Be efficient with your time at work.
• Take a five-minute break between projects.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues.
• Divide large projects into smaller tasks and tackle one task at a time.
• Be flexible and take criticism constructively.
If you have adopted these tips and still experience signs of stress
such as irritability, anxiety,
headaches, or poor work performance, you should consider seeking professional
care. The American Psychiatric Foundation reports that more than 75% of people
with workplace issues or mental health problems see substantial improvement in their job performance
after treatment.
A mental health professional, such as a Marriage
and Family Therapist (MFT) is trained to assess, diagnose, and treat
individuals with stress-related mental
heath conditions, such as experiencing
anxiety or having difficulty
concentrating. Therapy can help ease common sources of stress,
including
heavy workloads, financial worries, and problems
with work relationships.
